UNICEF runs campaign for reducing school drop-out rates

UNICEF is currently running a campaign to increase school attendance and reduce the number of cases of school drop-out, following a contract it signed with GDF Suez.

This project will be implemented in schools in 16 disadvantaged communities in Brasov, Calarasi, Covasna, Tulcea and Vrancea.

In Romania 2 out of 10 children leave school before they are in the 8th grade. The official school drop-out rate before this date reached 1.9 percent in 2007-2008 school year. Over the past years, between 300,000- 400,000 children abandoned school.

During this school year, approximately 5,000 children can benefit from this project which aims to transform schools into a friendly environment for pupils and teaching staff alike.
