Spain moves strawberry plantations to Romania

Plantations are set to be established in the central part of the country. with investors spurred by the relatively cheap cost of labor and the low cost of the land. According to the analysts of the weekly “Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits,” Romania also offers favorable weather conditions for strawberry production, and also good opportunities for sales on the internal market where competition among the producers remains relatively low. According to the weekly, Ukraine is also suited to investments in the field, which is confirmed by production growth rates. Strawberry production has been growing over the past four years by 55- 65 percent.
An estimated number of a million Romanians were living in Spain in 2006, many working illegally and mostly in the agricultural sector where they had jobs picking strawberries.
