Today, on the World Car Free Day, celebrated annually all over the world on September 22, in Bucharest, Bacau, Iasi and Cluj, events were organized by Greenpeace Romania to underline the negative effect that automobiles have on the environment and on people’s health.
Pro-environmental manifestations were held in downtown Bucharest with this occasion and people were encouraged by several organizations to use bicycles more often, which they can also rent, if they do not own them, from several centers across the city.
Currently, in Europe, 30 percent of CO2 emissions are produced by cars, which are also responsible for 60 percent of oil consumption, as reported by Greenpeace. Carbon dioxide is one of the gases responsible with global warming and the quantity that results from transport is increasing yearly. In Romania, between 1990 and 2007, CO2 emissions grew by 67 percent, while in Europe, by 30 percent.
World Car Free Day is part of the European Week of Mobility, taking place between September 20 and 26, meant to encourage physical activity and the use of less pollutive means of transport.
