Romanian Orthodox Church gets new patriarch

Dr. Daniel's rival candidates for the position of patriarch were His Beatitude Archbishop Bartolomeu of Cluj, Alba, Crisana and Maramures and His Holiness Ioan, Archbishop of Covasna and Harghita.
Daniel Ciobotea, 56, of Dobresti, Bara Commune, Timis County, followed courses of the University Institute of Theology Sibiu and the University Institute of Theology in Bucharest, then studied in France and Germany. In 1987, he entered into the monastic life at the Sihastria Monastery, Department of Neamt, with the name Daniel, under the guidance of Pious Father Cleopa Ilie.
