The most recent UNICEF report released in Johannesburg and entitled “The State of the World's Children,” revealed that women in the least developed countries have 300 times the risk of dying during labor than women in developed countries.
At the same time, the risk of dying during the first month of life for a child born in a developing country is nearly 14 times higher than for a child born in a developed country.
“Every year, more than half a million women die because of complications that occur during pregnancy or childbirth, including 70,000 girls aged between 15 and 19,” said Ann M. Veneman, executive director of UNICEF, at the launch of the report. “It is estimated that, between 1990 and the present day, 10 million women died because of complications during pregnancy or childbirth,” she added.
Approximately 99 percent of the deaths during pregnancy or due to complications take place in developing countries where the birth of a child continues to represent one of the major health risks for women. Most such deaths happen in Africa and Asia, where the high fertility rate, the lack of qualified personnel and the defective health systems represent a real danger and result in tragedy for many young women.
