Christian Hillkirk, 47, came to Romania to find out about the projects Hospice Casa Speranei in Brasov and Bucharest before returning to Great Britain to continue his training. The race involves six teams made up of three people each who will travel 440 miles on skis in one of the most inaccessible regions on earth where temperatures can reach -70 degrees Celsius. The race will last for approximately 30 days. Hillkirk is being sponsored by a Danish bank, clients, colleagues and anybody who wishes to contribute to this cause. He aims to raise EUR 65,000 for Hospice Casa Sperantei, which cares for children and adults suffering from incurable diseases. The organization is now in financial difficulty due to the hike in salaries in the local public health system as well as the international financial crisis.
“I was overwhelmed to see the high standards in the hospice, the hospitality and friendship of the staff and the fact that patients are glad to be there. I hope that through my efforts I can help the hospice continue this important activity. I would like to hear from anyone who would be willing to sponsor my initiative,” said Hillkirk.
