Internationally acclaimed soprano Nelly Miriciou plays Manon Lescaut at the Bucharest National Opera

Giacomo Puccini’s acclaimed opera, Manon Lescaut, will take center stage this Saturday, March 19, at the Bucharest National Opera. During this representation, Nelly Miricioiu (in picture) takes the leading role of the beautiful Manon Lescaut, while the tenor Daniel Magdal will play Des Grieux.

The opera’s libretto is based on a short novel by French author Antoine François Prevost, L’Histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut. Published in 1731, it follows the of le Chevalier Des Grieux and his lover Manon Lescaut. Des Grieux comes from a noble and landed family, but renounces of his hereditary wealth and incurs the disappointment of his father by eloping with Manon.

Nelly Miricioiu has previously performed at Royal Opera House – Covent Garden, English National Opera, Metropolitan Opera, Scala di Milano, the opera theaters of Paris, Geneva, Brussels, Amsterdam, Vienna, Lyon, Barcelona, Zurich, Roma, Hamburg, etc. In 1982, she made her debut at la Royal Opera House – Covent Garden with Nedda from I Pagliacci.

The soprano has taken the lead in some of the most renowned operas of the world, having so far portrayed, among others, Lucia di Lammermoor, Maria Stuarda, Anna Bolena, Lucrezia Borgia (Gaetano Donizzeti), Violetta of La Traviata (Giuseppe Verdi) or Mimi of La Boheme, Cio Cio San of Madama Butterfly or Tosca (Giacomo Puccini).

Daniel Magdal has been a soloist of the Bucharest National Opera between 1991 and 1997. In 1997, he settled in Germany and became a permanent collaborator at local theaters, while also participating at festivals in Mallorca (Spain), Osaka (Japan) or Edmonton (Canada).
