On September 2, Rosia Montana is celebrating Mining Day. The event is celebrated annually in communities from the areas with present or former mines. It encourages the preservation and perpetuation of the customs of the mining community from Rosia Montana, honored with special activities every year.
For the 2012 celebration, the activities for Mining Day include a tour to the old mine and the acid water purging pilot-station, a premiere for Romania, another tour to Catalina-Monulesti Gallery which preserves tracks of exploitation from all historical times and a visit to the restored houses in the historical center of Rosia Montana.
For the first tour, visitors can see the old mine which was opened between1971-2006. Visitors will get the chance to see how a modern mine works through the pilot project for the acid water purging station, and compare it with the old-fashioned technology used for exploiting the mining.
The second tour consists of a visit to Catalina-Monulesti Gallery, a place which maintains mining exploitation tracks for all the historical times. On this precise location, the biggest lot of Roman waxed tablets was discovered.
The visit to the historical center of Rosia Montana covers 16 restored buildings and other 160 houses for which maintenance works or emergency intervention were done.
