“North of Words,” the first exhibition in the project of the same name, will have its vernissage on Thursday, October 12, as part of the eighth edition of the international photography festival Bucharest Photofest.

The exhibition comprises 28 images taken by Rareș Beșliu during the first two expeditions of the “North of Words” project, both in Svalbard and Greenland. The photographs depict remote places, as beautiful as they are stirring; landscapes and animals that tell the story of a world warming much too quickly. Glaciers, icebergs, seals, walruses, and polar bears – these are the frames through which Rareș moves the viewer and brings up the topic of climate change, urging us all to take action.

“We’ve all seen in documentaries the huge icebergs breaking off from the glacier – and I think that’s the most representative image of global warming and climate change. I remember the thunder of the ice when it breaks and the waves it creates when it falls into the ocean, just as I think of the thick fog in Greenland, a rare phenomenon in the past. I remember the mosquitoes from there, beyond the Arctic Circle, but especially the coal mine in Svalbard, which is still operational in Longyearbyen, the northernmost human settlement. I’ve seen and experienced all these things, but I don’t think we all need to get close to the North Pole to understand what we and nature are going through. I hope my photos are enough and convey everything I can no longer express in words,” says Rareș Beșliu.

The project is the first initiative of the “North of Words” Association, which aims, through photography, to get closer to people’s hearts, to help and contribute to the fight against the effects of climate change. More information is available at www.lanord.ro and instagram.com/lanord.ro.

The exhibition is open to the public from October 6th to 15th in Piața Amzei and can be visited for free. The vernissage will take place on October 12th at 18:00. More details on Facebook.
