The European Conference on Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (3ECEES) – one of the world’s leading scientific events in the field, will be held at the Palace of Parliament in the period between September 4–9 2022 and is organized by The Romanian Association for Earthquake Engineering, with the support of The Technical University of Civil Engineering of Bucharest (UTCB) and The National Institute for Earth Physics (INFP).

The high-level event is held under the High Patronage of the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, and will reunite more than 700 participants from over 60 countries, aiming to identify means of seismic risk reduction through the cooperation, communication and debating of European breakthroughs, at the same time with promoting earthquake engineering and seismology with the purpose of attaining enhanced societal seismic resilience.

The conference, hosted by Romania for the first time, provides a creative and stimulating environment for sharing and tackling the most challenging topics of global importance and interest in Earthquake Engineering and Seismology among top representatives from the research, engineering and academic fields as well as relevant representatives from the construction field.

”Organising in Bucharest the 3rd European Conference on Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (3ECEES) positions our country in a remarkable way in the European research and education areas. The edition hosted by Romania continues the work which begun with the first conference held in Geneva, Switzerland in 2006 and the second one in Istanbul, Turkey in 2014. This format of the conference was designed as a result of the identified need to reunite, once every 8 years, specialists from the Earthquake Engineering and Seismology fields. Through 3ECEES we aim to boost the European cooperation in these fields, to push the frontiers of knowledge and to equip the decision makers with the necessary information in order to attain seismic risk reduction and enhanced societal resilience. The conference benefits from a high-level European participation, being attended by renowned specialists in the field, professors, researchers and experts who will deliver numerous interesting invited lectures” stated prof. dr. Radu Văcăreanu, Rector of The Technical University of Civil Engineering of Bucharest (UTCB).

The event is of major importance both globally and locally, considering that in Romania fourteen seismic sources contribute to the country’s earthquake hazard, placing it as a high seismic risk country. Researchers noted that the seismic moment released by the Vrancea intermediate-depth seismic source in the twentieth century is about three times larger than the one released by all the seismic sources in Italy.

”As representative of the National Institute for Earth Physics (INFP)  and Vice-President of the European Seismological Commission (ESC), I coordinate the Seismology section of the 3rd European Conference on Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (3ECEES) held in Bucharest, Romania. The conference represents an excellent opportunity for experience exchange among researchers, professors and experts working in the Seismology field or the connected domains, including the social aspects of Seismology. On the other hand, nowadays both seismologists and engineers play an important role in supporting the society in reducing the seismic hazard. The main goal in case of a major earthquake is to reduce the total damages and casualties” stated dr. Constantin Ionescu, President of the Board and Director General INFP.

Throughout the 6-day event, top specialists from all over the world will discuss vital and globally relevant topics such as: European seismicity; seismic hazard analysis; seismic analysis and design of buildings and structure; seismic exposure, fragility and risk; seismic evaluation and rehabilitation of buildings and structures; seismic exposure, as well as the lessons learned from recent earthquakes.

The decision to organise the third edition in Bucharest was made in 2018 following the votes of the European Association for Earthquake Engineering (EAEE) and the European Seismological Commission (ESC). Romania’s candidacy was supported by the UTCB rector, prof. dr. Radu Văcăreanu and the director general of the INFP, dr. Constantin Ionescu.

Sponsors of this year’s edition of the European Conference on Earthquake Engineering and Seismology are SCC Erbașu (Platinum), Kinemetrics (Gold), Spektra (Silver) and Progetto Sisma (Silver). The event is supported as media partners by: New Money, Business-Review, Wall-Street.ro and 9am.ro.
