The official opening of the Timișoara 2023 – European Capital of Culture program, which will take place on February 17-19, 2023, quickly enters the atmosphere of a cultural celebration alongside outstanding names of the theater, film and music scene in Timișoara and the whole country.

The opening show is directed by Bobi Pricop, one of the most popular directors, collaborator of the most important theaters in Romania. He proposes innovative artistic formulas at international festivals, his shows are multi-awarded, and in 2017 he was on the list of candidates for the European Theater Award – Theatrical Realities.

The hosts of the expected event are Timisoara actresses Christine Cizmaş and Ioana Bugarin. Christine Cizmaş, a founding member of the “Auăleu – Garage and Court Theatre”, has repeatedly participated in important tours and festivals with the troupe of the German Theater in Timișoara, and Ioana Bugarin is an actress in the Odeon Theater team and has had roles notable in several films such as The Staircase (2020) and the HBO series Ruxx.

One of the most important moments of the evening will be supported by the band Implant Pentru Refuz. With over 26 years of existence and always fresh sound, they will continue to write the complex story of contemporary music at the grand opening with special guests Adrian Despot and Dan Byron. Adrian Despot is a respected and beloved native music artist, vocalist of the Vița de Vie band, and Dan Byron, with over 20 years of activity in alternative music in Romania, composed together with byron, the band in which he has been active since 2009, the soundtrack- of an original HBO Romania series, filmed the “Live Underground” concert in Salina Turda and is one of the leading bands of contemporary Romanian rock.

An absolute premiere will be the on-stage collaboration between Implant Pentru refus and Alyona Alyona, an artist from Ukraine who has become, in less than a year, a sensation of the hip-hop scene. In the debut year of her career, in 2019, she became the winner of the ANCHOR Award (Reeperbahn International Music Award for the most promising emerging musical talent), and in 2021 she received the Music Moves Europe Talent Award and the Audience Award at ESNS, Netherlands. In 2022, Alyona was already a member of the jury at the Music Moves Europe Awards, and Forbes Magazine mentioned her in the “30 musicians under 30” category.

The celebration in Unirii will continue with the Muaré Experience, an exceptional show that combines the rock concert of Duchamp Pilot, accompanied by the well-known Timișoara guitarist Horea Silvio Crișovan, with an aerial acrobatics show by the Spanish company Voalá Project. Also, Taraf de Caliu will perform together with the Bulgarian clarinetist Filip Simeonov, tympanist Alexei Ciobanu from the “Timișul” Folk Ensemble and the IMPEX band.

The well-known Swedish-British composer Jay-Jay Johanson will give a concert in the hall of the Palace of Culture on February 18 and will have EMAA as the opening act, a young artist originally from Lugoj who has written music with artists such as The Motans and had broadcasts for TV shows like “Hackerville” aired on HBO Europe and TNT Series.

Last but not least, we will have the Romanian composer and pianist Andrei Irimia, who will delight us with his specific hypnotic neoclassical music, accompanied by Abel Chircă, violinist in the Banatul Timisoara Philharmonic Orchestra.
