In Bucharest this weekend

This weekend, Bucharest feels the vibe of international music with two highly-waited concerts: Pink Martini and Jose Carreras.  Check out several highlights from this weekend’s arts and culture program here.

Jose Carreras

May 25, Sala Palatului, starting 20.00

Spanish tenor Jose Carreras is particularly known for his performances in operas of Verdi and Puccini. He made his debut on the opera stage at the age of 11 as Trujamán in Manuel de Falla’s El retablo de Maese Pedro. His career encompassed over 60 roles on the stages of the world’s leading opera houses and in the recording studio.

He gained fame with a wider audience as one of The Three Tenors along with Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti. He is also known for his humanitarian work as the president of the José Carreras International Leukemia Foundation (La Fundacio Internacional Jose Carreras per a la Lluita contra la Leucemia), which he established following his own recovery from the disease in 1988.

Pink Martini

May 26, Sala Palatului, starting 20.00

Pink Martini returns toBucharestfor new show in order to promote their newest album A Retrospective. Their sound combines Cuban Jazz with chamber music, Brazilian marches and film soundtracks, the 12-piece orchestra has also a multi-linguistic repertoire that takes you from the great metropolis to the ports ofIstanbulor the Brazilian beaches.

The latest musical effort of the band, A Retrospective, is an overview of the band’s 16- year- career and comprises some of their best rated songs such as Una Notte a Napoli, Hang On Little Tomato, Donde Estas Yolanda?, Hey Eugene, Sympathique (Je ne veux pas travailler), Lilly, Que Sera Sera or Amado Mio.

Tickets are on sale in the Eventim network and can be acquired at prices of RON 110, RON 140, RON 170 or RON 200.

The White Night of the Galleries

Exhibitions, performances, auditions, concerts, street-art exhibitions and an after-party taking place in well-known galleries or in newly-founded ones, alternative spaces or temporarily transformed institutions are all on the to-visit  list for this year’s edition of The White Night of the Galleries (NAG), happening on May 25.

At the end of NAG#6 tour, all art lovers are invited at the Atelierul de Productie / The Production Workshop for the official after-party of the White Night of theArtGalleries.

FlowerShow

Until May 27, Herastrau Park (Expoflora zone) and University of Agronomic Science and Veterinary Medicine

The exhibition presents flowers and ornamental plants, gardening accessories, handicraft products and also traditional Romanian food. The public can participate to free workshops of floral composition and arrangement techniques. More details about the program here.

Bucharest International Biennale of Contemporary Art

The fifth edition for Bucharest Biennale (BB5), an event promoting awareness and dissemination of culture, opens today. The main exhibition is curated by Anne Barlow (UK/USA), executive director of Art in General, New York, with the theme “Tactics for the here and now”.

The exhibition is installed in seven venues in Bucharest, and a considerable part of the exhibited works was created especially for this event.
