Crunch time for raw food expo in Bucharest this weekend

Bucharest’s fourth raw food expo, Raw Generation, takes place on 25 March in Sala Expo of the Rin Grand Hotel. Romania’s first national event promoting raw foods is organized by blogger, author and chef Ligia Pop, who hosts an online show on the subject. It will be attended by 50 representatives promoting products intended to facilitate a healthy lifestyle and diet. Presentations about raw food, tastings, culinary demonstrations and workshops will be held, on themes including therapeutics, massage, fitness, recipes, veganism, self-help, mental and emotional health and education, cosmetics and beauty. Activities for children will also be arranged.

Pop says she is organizing the fair to promote a lifestyle where people consume more raw, vegetarian food. She advocates cooking methods such as slow preparation in the oven, steaming and use of a slow cooker, rather than frying, cooking in fat and other procedures that can reduce the quality and health benefits of the ingredients. Her regime is based on eating a wide variety of vegetables, seeds, nuts and plant-derived food, dried or fresh fruit and superfoods such as seaweed and raw cocoa. Pop argues that using these principles it is possible to enjoy a delicious, varied and nutritionally balanced diet that will even satisfy the tastes of gourmands.

The chef says that the raw vegan food movement has hundreds of thousands of adherents around the world and the number is constantly growing, with an estimated 1 million vegans and over 7 million vegetarians at current estimates. Celebrities who have professed to follow the raw vegan diet include Robin Williams, Bryan Adams, Gwyneth Paltrow, Woody Harrelson, Demi Moore, Natalie Portman, Uma Thurman, Kirsten Dunst and Alicia Silverstone.
