Popescu's resignation is the latest in a series which saw Bogdan Chireac, senior foreign policy editor, leave the newspaper after the eruption of a scandal in which it was revealed that apart from his journalistic activity, he was also a shareholder in a company which had businesses with the state. A month after Chireac's resignation in November, the daily's editor-in-chief Adrian Ursu also left the publication. Popescu, who is also president of the Romanian Press Club, attributed his resignation to the fact that the managerial objectives for 2008 imposed by major shareholder Adrian Sarbu were “impossible to attain.” Gandul was created in 2005 after several members of the editorial team at daily Adevarul quit en masse and decided to found a new title.
