Beyond the Hills, the latest film by Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, has entered the official selection at this year’s Cannes film festival.
Besides directing the film, Mungiu also wrote the script for it. The film tells the story of two girls, Alina and Voichita, who were raised together in foster care, and were reunited at an isolated convent in Romania. Alina would like to emigrate to Germany and wants Voichita to come with her. Voichita however is deeply attached to her convent life. The film stars Cosmina Stratan, Cristina Flutur, Dana Tapalaga, Catalina Harabagiu and Valeriu Andriuta.
Mungiu won a Palme d’Or in 2007 for the film 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days.
