This weekend, the Embassy of Japan in Romania extends a warm invitation to all Bucharest residents and tourists to immerse themselves in the beauty and traditions of Japanese culture at the upcoming cherry blossom festival, ‘Hanami’, scheduled for April 13th.

The Embassy recently announced the 5th edition of the annual celebration. Set amidst the serene backdrop of the Japanese Garden nestled within King Mihai I Park (formerly known as Herastrau Park), the festival promises a delightful array of cultural activities and experiences for attendees of all ages.

One of the highlights of the festival is the enchanting sight of the Japanese cherry trees in full bloom, adorning the park with their delicate pink blossoms. Known as one of Bucharest’s most cherished natural shows, the blooming cherry trees serve as a picturesque backdrop for the festivities.

Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of hands-on workshops, including the intricate art of origami and the graceful strokes of calligraphy. Traditional Japanese games will also be available for those seeking to experience the playful side of Japanese culture.

Adding to the excitement are demonstrations of kyudo, the traditional Japanese art of archery, along with displays of kendo and karate, showcasing the discipline and skill inherent in Japanese martial arts. Attendees are encouraged to embrace the spirit of the festival by donning traditional Japanese attire, adding an extra layer of authenticity to the cultural experience.

Moreover, guests will have the chance to indulge their senses by sampling sake, a Japanese rice wine renowned for its subtle flavors and refined taste.

What is Hanami

Hanami is a traditional Japanese custom that literally translates to “flower viewing” in English. It refers specifically to the practice of enjoying and appreciating the beauty of cherry blossoms (sakura) during their brief blooming season, which typically occurs in the springtime. Hanami gatherings often involve picnics or strolls beneath the cherry blossom trees, where friends, families, and colleagues come together to admire the delicate pink and white flowers. Hanami holds deep cultural significance in Japan and is considered a time for reflection, appreciation of nature’s fleeting beauty, and celebration of the arrival of spring.

The story behind Japanase garden in Bucharest

The Japanese Garden in Bucharest’s Herastrau Park was first opened in 1998,  with the direct involvement of the Japanese Embassy in Bucharest. The garden maintains the strict layout rules imposed by the tradition of these spaces. According to a previous information presented by RADOR newsagency,  there are about 500 such gardens outside Japan. The five design principles of Japanese gardens are asymmetry, enclosure, borrowed scenery, balance, and symbolism.
