Bucharest is set to once again buzz with the excitement of the city’s most awaited urban event – “Open Streets, Bucharest – Urban Promenade.” Now in its fourth edition, this dynamic initiative spearheaded by the Bucharest City Hall promises to transform the bustling streets of the capital into pedestrian paradises, inviting residents and tourists alike to rediscover the heart of the city.

From April 6th to October 13th, 2024, the cityscape of Bucharest will undergo a remarkable metamorphosis as key streets are temporarily pedestrianized, offering a pause from the usual hustle and bustle. Organized by the Directorate of Culture, Education, Tourism, along with ARCUB – the Cultural Center of Bucharest Municipality, and PROEDUS – the Center for Educational and Sports Projects of Bucharest Municipality, this initiative aims to create vibrant public spaces for leisure, recreation, and cultural enrichment.

Last year’s event attracted over a million participants, and this year promises to be even bigger and better. Kicking off on April 6th, the iconic Calea Victoriei will be transformed into a pedestrian-only zone, stretching from Piata Victoriei to Gheorghe Manu Street, and from Dacia Boulevard to Splaiul Independenței. This scenic route will offer visitors the opportunity to marvel at Bucharest’s rich architectural heritage while enjoying a diverse program of artistic performances scheduled throughout the day.

In a city where traffic congestion is a common sight, Open Streets provides a welcome respite, allowing residents to reclaim the streets for recreational purposes. During the event weekends, traffic on Calea Victoriei will be diverted during the day, with normal vehicular movement resuming overnight. Additionally, to ensure the safety of participants, bicycle lanes on closed streets will also be temporarily closed.

From theater shows and dance demonstrations to live street concerts and creative workshops for children, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

As Bucharest embraces this urban revival, Open Streets serves as a testament to the city’s vibrant spirit and its commitment to creating inclusive and sustainable urban environments. So mark your calendars and join in the festivities as Bucharest opens its streets and invites you to explore, connect, and celebrate the essence of urban life.
