Cosmote Romania has launched 3G services which will be available to the company’s customers at speeds of up to 21.6 Mbps. According to the firm, the 3G network covers almost 58 percent of the population.

3G services are currently available in 11 Romanian – Bucharest, Iasi, Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara, Constanta, Galati, Craiova, Brasov, Moinesti, Oltenita and Orastie – plus almost 300 smaller towns. The 3G services provided by Cosmote Romania are also available abroad, in 30 countries through 37 operators. Complementary to this launch, the firm also offers laptop connectivity through Connect EVDO, at speeds of up to 3.1 Mbps. In addition to 3G, the operator is providing mobile internet services with speeds of up to 3.1 Mbps on the CDMA network. Recently it upgraded its existing GPRS data network to EDGE. At the launch of 3G mobile broadband services, the company’s CEO, Stefanos Theocharopoulos, said: “We are very pleased to offer 3G services to our customers. Mobile broadband is already demonstrating its enormous market potential and Cosmote is fast establishing its position as a strong player in Romania.”

Upon his appointment as CEO

of Cosmote Romania in 2008, Theocharopoulos said his main priority would be to find an alternative way for Cosmote to offer 3G services in Romania. Last year, Cosmote took over Telemobil (Zapp) following a transaction that totaled EUR 207 million, which included the latter’s debts. This takeover made it possible for Cosmote, the third largest mobile telephony operator on the local market, to be able to compete on this segment with Orange and Vodafone, the top two operators on the market.
