Carrefour opens first Bucharest supermarket

Carrefour has opened its first supermarket in Bucharest in Militari, its 26th in the country. Carrefour Market Gorjului has a sales area of 930 sqm, 11 cash registers, and a staff of 80. Some 10,000 products are available, 1,000 under Carrefour’s own brand. Sales in Romania for Q1 of 2010 amounted to EUR 269 million, a 3.5 percent rise on a like-for-like basis due to selling space expansion. Carrefour employs over 495,000 people in Romania, and runs 22 hypermarkets and 26 supermarkets. Local expansion plans for this year include the opening of 10 other supermarkets and a hypermarket in Drobeta Turnu Severin.
