Razvan Nicolescu, the delegate minister of energy, said Tuesday the government will suspend for an undetermined period the liberalization of gas prices for households and will delay by at least two and a half years the same process for companies, reports Mediafax newswire.
He said the suspension was necessary because in the past two years the medium wage in Romania fell, while the final gas price rose by 16 percent.
“The problem of gas price affordability by the population is worrisome. For companies, the liberalization is almost completed according to the schedule, but we want to extend the deadline. We are at a point when we have to start proposing measures,” said Nicolescu
The department for energy has proposed to the European Commission, the executive arm of the EU, to accept the postponement of the liberalization of gas prices for households by two and half years, and to maintain the current price of domestic gas by at least July 2016.
