Academic Ionel Valentin Vlad is the new president of the Romanian Academy, elected today in the General Assembly, receiving 65 votes. His rival was mathematician Viorel Barbu, who received 60 votes. Vlad replaces academic Ionel Haiduc, who was at the helm of the institution since 2006.
According to Vlad’s CV, he is researcher at the National Research – Development Institute for Laser, Plasma and Radiation Physics, and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Physics, University of Bucharest.
The Romanian Academy is the highest scientific and cultural center of Romania, bringing together leading figures from the country and abroad in all fields of science, arts and literature.
According to the website of the institution, the Romanian Academy can have a maximum of 181 and 135 corresponding members and honorary members of which no more than 40 of the country. Currently, the Academy has 77 full members, 80 corresponding members, 86 foreign honorary members and 31 honorary members of the country.
