Bronze statue of King Carol unveiled, after previous vandalization

A statue representing King Carol of Romania (who ruled the country between 1866 and 1914) was unveiled on Monday, in the presence of princess Margarita, a direct successor of the king, and mayor Oprescu. The ceremony marked the return of the statue in Piata Revolutiei (Revolution Square), also known as the Royal Palace Square.

The unveiling of the statue was initially planned for December 1, but had to be postponed after being daubed with political graffiti last week. The derogatory messages were directed against Bucharest’s mayor, Sorin Oprescu – “Mr. Oprescu, why isn’t the national stadium ready, as you promised? Resignation!” – written in red paint, on the side of the six-meter base, according to media reports. The words “Honor to him!” had also been added above the name of the king.

The 13m statue, which was created by sculptor Florin Codre, is made entirely out of bronze.
