The new headquarters of the Romanian National Library was inaugurated today. The building was neglected for years after the anti-communist revolution in Romania, and much of it had degraded.

The new building is located on Unirii Blvd. and will also host the Ministry of Culture starting with January next year.

“I say this is an important step, after 22 years we will have a building for the National Library, and little by little we will gather all the collections in the warehouses,” said the Minister of Culture.

The works in the building will be completed by Aedificia Carpati, a company which signed with the Ministry of Culture a contract that is worth nearly EUR 70 million, no VAT. The contract was attributed following a public bidding and had a stipulated execution time of 30 months. The funds used for the library came from an EUR 200 loan granted to the Romanian government by the European Council Development Bank.
