Romanian former PM Adrian Nastase left the Floreasca Hospital on Tuesday night and was moved by ambulance to the Rahova penitentiary hospital where he will receive further treatment, one week after trying to commit suicide.
“Nastase is accommodated in the intensive care unit, with another prisoner, in a room that has two beds and a toilet,” said Nina Stroe, spokesperson of the Rahova hospital.
Nastase has been accused of fund embezzlement worth EUR 1.5 million to finance his presidential run-off campaign in 2004. He will have to spend 2 years in prison. This is the highest ranking political figure that was sentenced to jail on corruption charges in the last two decades.
The doctors that treated the former PM in Floreasca Hospital and three police officers have allegedly delayed the execution of the penalty imposed on Nastase and are currently investigated by prosecutors.
