The first stage of the NetCity project, the metropolitan optic fiber backbone in Bucharest, presupposes the creation of 845 kilometers of underground channels by the end of the year, so far 68 percent of these works have already been accomplished, Mihai Ionescu, commercial manager of NetCity Telecom, said during the Communications Day.

At the moment, there are over 6,800 buildings and around 50,000 households that have services via the NetCity network. By the end of the year, the number of buildings connected to NetCity should reach 10,000.

The project should be carried out in 2 stages that should see through the creation of 2,500 kilometers of underground channels. In the first stage, which should be completed by the end of the year, 850 kilometers should be ready. In the second stage, approximately 1,600 kilometers should be completed starting with 2013-2014, explained Ionescu.
