ENEL unveiled during “Focus on Power”, a seminar on energy organized today by Business Review, its plans to implement the smart metering technology for the Romanian market. The Smart Meter Project for Romania consists of the replacement of 2.6 million traditional meters with Automatic Management Measurement System, according to Ion Aldea, Head of Metering at ENEL Romania.
This measure should reduce power distribution costs and also contribute to a reduction in commercial losses. Furthermore, Romania would align to the EU provisions of smart metering (3rd Energy Package) and would lay the foundation for the development of Smart Grids.
The smart meter allows to electricity operator to remotely deactivate a consumer without on-field intervention while curtailment functionality ensures minimum social supply to all, instead of outright cut-offs.
In July 2011, Enel and Electrica signed a joint position paper defining the necessary regulatory changes and investment recognition. Also, the technical characteristics of the standard meter device were identified.
