Romanian wine producer Lacerta Winery sold more than 40,000 bottles of premium wine in 2011, its first year of activity on the local market. For 2012 the company estimates that its turnover will go beyond EUR 1 million by selling 150,000 bottles of wine.

Lacerta Winery is owned by four businessmen, three Austrian and one German, and was set up in 2003 in Fintesti, Dealu Mare region. EUR 7 million have been invested in the business, roughly 25 percent of which came from EU funds.

Lacerta wines are sold mainly through horeca and specialized wine shops. Last year, about 30 percent of the wine was sold in the company’s own shop in Fintesti. Prices vary between RON 39 and RON 69 per bottle.

For 2012 the company has announced plans to start exports to European countries. However, the Romanian market will remain its priority, said Walter Friedl, partner with Lacerta Winery.

This year the company will add seven more wine assortments to its product portfolio: Lacerta Rose Riviera 2010, Lacerta Feteasca Neagra 2010, Lacerta Merlot 2010, Lacerta Blaufraenkisch 2010, Lacerta Pinot Noir 2010, Lacerta Sauvignon Blanc Reserva 2010 and Chardonnay Reserva 2010.

Lacerta Winery owns 82 ha of grapevine in Fintesti, Buzau county, and so far it has no plans to further invest in buying more land and increasing the production capacity, said Friedl.

In addition to the land, the Lacerta domain includes a 2,000 sqm complex with modern production facilities and a wine cellar as well as a shop and a wine tasting unit. The company has also refurbished the Dorobantu Manor House which was designed by Romanian architect Ion Mincu and was built in 1901 on the first 11 ha plot the investors bought.
