Romania will delay the ratification of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) until the European Court of Justice will make a decision on this matter, as announced by Dan Suciu, spokesman of the Romanian government.
The European Commission will be referring ACTA to the European Union’s top court.
The Court of Justice will be asked to assess whether ACTA is incompatible with the EU’s fundamental rights and freedoms including freedom of expression and information.
“Today there was a decision in the executive, following discussions with ministers responsible for ACTA. The international evolutions were taken into consideration, as there are states that have already suspended this agreement, and the European Commission addressed the Court of Justice for an evaluation of the agreement. Given all these, it was decided that the ratification will be delayed until we have an answer from the Court of Justice, and only afterwards a decision regarding ACTA will be made in Romania’s case,” said Suciu.
