Fast food chain McDonald’s Romania has opened its first and only new restaurant this year inside the America House office building in Bucharest. The company intends to continue expansion in 2012 and to refurbish existing units, but Daniel Boaje, the company’s GM refused to disclose the exact number of future openings.

The company has considerably slowed down its expansion pace in 2011. The record for new openings was reached back in 1997 when McDonald’s opened 15 new restaurants. Should the economy improve next year, McDonald’s Romania is ready to open more new locations said Boaje. He explained that despite the tough economic environment, McDonald’s Romania managed to increase the number of customers this year although the frequency of visits has “slightly” decreased. He estimates that this year the company will have around 50 million visits.

The company reported a turnover of about EUR 99.5 million in 2010 and it is “very likely” that this year’s sales will go beyond EUR 100 million said Boaje, without disclosing the actual figure.

In addition to this new location, McDonald’s has also invested in 2011 in refurbishing four of its existing restaurants. The new restaurant is the fourth in Romania to feature a McCafe area. The other are three are also located in Bucharest and have been opened this year on the grounds of existing McDonald’s restaurants.

McDonald’s Romania has been present in Romania for 16 years and it now operates 64 restaurants country-wide, 28 of which are located in Bucharest. The company employs 3,500 people.
