The Romanian government has decided that it will continue to set a limit to the number of work permits for foreigners this year as well.
The threshold for the work permits is 5,500 in 2012, the same as last year. The executive has axed the number of authorisations for permanent workers and cross-border workers.
This measure ensures “the control of the number of foreigners who enter the Romanian territory for work purposes and limits the number of detached workers for whom no social insurance contributions are paid in Romania,” according to the Romanian officials.
Of the total number of 5,500 work permits, 3,000 will be authorisations for permanent workers, while last year 4,000 authorisations were approved.
Also, 700 authorisations will be approved for detached workers, while last year 600 were approved.
Last but not least, there will be 100 authorisations approved for seasonal workers, compared to 200 approved in 2011.
A total of 1,000 work permits will be granted for highly skilled workers coming from abroad.
On June 30, 2011, there were 59,566 foreigners registered legally in Romania, of whom 49,301 were temporary staying in Romania and 10,256 were registered as permanently staying in Romania.
