Petrom and the Romanian affiliate of Exxon Mobil Corporation have started exploration drilling on Domino-1, the first deepwater exploration well in the Romanian sector of the Black Sea. The well is located 170 kilometers offshore Romania, in water with depths of 1,000 meters.

Drilling operations are expected to take about 90 days and the companies will use “Deepwater Champion”, a world-class drillship, which was previously used in a drilling program offshore Turkey.

“We are very pleased to collaborate with Petrom in this project, a collaboration built upon ExxonMobil’s experience as a leader in deepwater exploration and Petrom’s vast experience in Romania. We highly value the efforts of the Romanian authorities for supporting the progress of the deepwater Black Sea exploration program,” said Ian A. Fischer, Managing Director of ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Romania Limited.

The Neptun Block which covers an area of approximately 9,900 square km may be further developed if the current drilling operation will finalize with a discovery of hydrocarbon deposits.
