Romanian president Traian Basescu said this weekend that the Government will try to negotiate with the IMF the rescheduling of deregulated prices in natural gas and electricity for companies and households through to 2020.
Under the current agreement, Romania should remove the regulated energy prices for companies starting 2013 and for household consumption in2015.
“After speaking with prime-minister Emil Boc, I concluded that we will try to delay the liberalization of household prices until 2020, and the price for companies will be deregulated in the 2015-2017 interval, versus 2013,” said Romanian president Traian Basescu. “These terms have been assumed by Romania when joining the EU, 2013-2015, and practically we are trying to renegotiate them, taking into account the real purchasing power of Romanians and the economy.”
The IMF says deregulated prices will remove price distortions and attract private investment in Romania.
This will be achieved through the transposition of the 3rd EU energy package (gas and electricity) into national legislation and by creating an independent regulator (ANRE). The government should also establish what a vulnerable energy consumer is. At present, all household consumers are considered vulnerable.
