National railway operator CFR will modernize the railway infrastructure using nonreimbursable funds from the EU totaling EUR 479 million.

Around EUR 248 million will be used for building the boarder railway Curtici-Arad, which is expected to be completed in 15 months. A consortium of Alstom-Sweitelsky-Astaldi and Euro Construct Trading ’98 – Dafora will build the line.

Another EUR 208 million has been approved for the 23 km Sighisoara-Atel railway, which will be built by a consortium of FCC-Alpine-Azvi. The line is expected to be completed in 3 years.

The European Commission will ensure 85 percent of financing for the two projects, while the Government will cover the remaining 15 percent.

CFR will also modernize 4 railway stations as part of the same program.

“We have inked projects totaling EUR 3.6 billion. Another 47 projects, worth EUR 1.9 billion are in the contract signing stage. I can tell you that EU absorption has increased from 1 percent to 12 percent during my mandate,” said Anca Boagiu, minister of Transportation, quoted by Agerpres newswire.

Boagiu said the railway sector will receive another EUR 930 million financing from the EU, while EUR 1.3 billion has already been approved for roads.

Last year, CFR used EUR 216 million of nonreimbursable EU funds to modernize 5 stations, repair a tunnel and build a 35 km railway line.
