Aristotel Cancescu, president of the Brasov County Council, has taken over the 4 licenses that BBC owned in Romania, in cities such as Bucharest, Timisoara, Constanta and Sibiu, according to Mediafax newswire.

BBC has owned a license in Bucharest since 2005, in Timisoara since 2006, in Constanta and Sibiu since 2007.

Radio BBC Romania stopped airing in Romania in August 2008, after 68 years of activity, as a result of budget cuts agreed between BBC World Service and the British government for the years 2008-2011.

Cancescu controls the BBC Romania shares after a takeover via the firm Canaris SRL, which he controls.

The former BBC radio station will transform into radio Viocan, which is controlled by Canaris SRL, and will broadcast generalist content, nearly 4 percent of the time information programs and 96 percent entertainment programs.
