Romania registers the fourth highest death rate due to assault among the 28 European Union member states, after the three Baltic States, Eurostat data show.
According to Eurostat, death is due to assault if it results from homicide or injuries inflicted by another person with intent to injure or kill. Deaths related to legal interventions and war are excluded.
In 2015, Romania has had a assault-related death rate of 1.6 per 100,000 persons, the fourth highest rate in the EU after Latvia (5.14), Lithuania (4.11) and Estonia (3.64).
At the opposite end of the scale, the lowest rates of deaths due to assault were recorded in 2015 in the United Kingdom (0.1), Ireland, France and Germany (all 0.5).
At EU level, the assault death rate stood on average at 0.7 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in 2015.
“In the EU, in absolute terms, Germany (441 deaths) and Italy (395) recorded the most deaths from assault in 2015. They were followed by France (340), Romania (301) and Poland (293),” Eurostat said.
