Romania’s Consitutional Court has ruled out that the changes to the referendum law are constitutional, with the judges rejecting the arguments of opposition parties PNL and USR.
The opposition parties claimed that certain provisions in the law are unclear. President Klaus Iohannis submitted the draft bill for reexamination, but MPs rejected the request and approved the same bill once again. Then, it was challenged by the opposition parties at the Constitutional Court.
At the end of last year, PNL and USR challenged the draft bill once again as it stated that the date for the organization of a referendum to change the Constitution should be established by the government. The Constitutional Court approved the request of the opposition parties.
“To be clear: PSD uses the citizens’ initiatives to change the Constitution on the definition of the family so as to change the referendum law, which is a fair law from our perspective, and to reduce the attributions of the president,” said the head of USR, Dar Barna.
