Anastasiu, AHK Romania: Unsustainable growth of public sector salaries has immediate effects on private sector

Dragos Anastasiu, the president of the Romanian-German Chamber of Commerce (AHK Romania), says that the growth of wages in the public sector is probably unsustainable, with immediate effects on the private sector, according to Agerpres.

Anastasiu said: “We have a problem with the bureaucracy that suffocates us every day, which comes together with a lack of digitalisation, we have a problem with Romania’s image, which is much worse than reality and which prevents us from having more exports, more foreign investments and more tourism, for example, and we also have a problem with the probably unsustainable growth of salaries in the public sector, which has immediate repercussions on the private sector. It is a growth that we want, on one hand, we understand that we have to pay well, but on the other hand we can’t disconnect it from productivity. If we don’t do something immediately in all these areas, dark clouds will appear on the horizon.”

The AHK Romania president pointed out that in 2017, Romania’s economic growth was much too reliant on consumption, and the lack of predictability and dialogue between decision-makers are causing concerns for the business environment.

“These worries come not just from the three themes we’ve been discussing for 27 years – infrastructure, education and health – but also from a few things that are more urgent, like the deep crisis in the workforce, both numerically and in terms of quality. There’s also a significant crisis due to the lack of predictability, transparency, dialogue between decision-makers and businesses, both at the local and central level,” said Anastasiu.

He added that within AHK Romania working groups have been created which are represented in the Coalition for the Development of Romania for debates and solutions for health, tourism, education and fiscal policy.

AHK Romania was founded in 2002 and currently has around 580 members.
