The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) said that no Romanian citizen has been identified up to now among the people that were injured or killed in Turkey, where a failed coup attempt unfolded Friday night through Saturday morning.
“As soon as the security conditions allowed it, a team of the General Consulate of Romania in Istanbul went to the Ataturk International Airport in Istanbul to provide assistance to Romanian citizens that were there,” according to a statement by MAE.
A crisis cell was created at the initiative of the minister of foreign affairs, Lazar Comanescu. Representatives of the Romanian Embassy in Turkey and of the General Consulates in Istanbul and Izmir are in touch with Romanians that might need assistance.
Around 200 Romanians were stuck on the Ataturk Airport on Saturday and the MAE was working to bring them home, said the ambassador.
The Turkish sea side resorts have been an attractive destination for Romanians in the past few years.
The MAE advised Romanians in Turkey to stay indoors as the situation in the country is still fluid. In addition, the ministry said that Romanian tourists that are in Turkey should get in touch with the tourism agencies so as to plan their return in the country.
Some 200 people have been killed after a faction of the armed forces attempted to topple the regime of president Recep Erdogan. More than 1,000 people were injured and close to 1,600 military officers were detained.
Both president Klaus Iohannis and PM Dacian Ciolos said that Turkey is a strategic ally of Romania and that the democratically elected institutions have to be respected.
