Leonard Orban, minister of European Affairs, and Norwegian State Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Gry Larsen, signed, yesterday, agreements for a new round of EEA and Norway grants worth EUR 306 million for the 2009-2014 period.

Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway will invest over EUR 300 million in Romania, through EEA Grants, representing combined support from the three countries, which amounts to EUR 191 million, and Norway Grants totaling EUR 115.

Romania was allocated EUR 98.5 million between 2004-2009 for projects in environment protection, health care, culture and durable development.

The signed memorandums establish the fund allocation mechanism which is rather similar to structural and cohesion funds.

Around EUR 133 million will be invested in the areas of environment and climate change, while EUR 24 million will be invested into green business projects.

Justice and home affairs receive EUR 25 million and EUR 22 million will be used for reducing discrimination.

Romania civil society will be supported with a EUR 30 million NGO fund that aims to promote social justice, democracy and sustainable development.

“We have a great interest in expanding our cooperation with Romania. It is positive to see that this keen interest exists on both sides,” said Gry Larsen, Norwegian State Secretary of Foreign Affairs.

Funding is also being made available to finance projects within the sectors for human and social development, cultural heritage, research and scholarships, and decent work.
