Almost 6 out of 10 Romanian employees admit they shop online during their work hours at least once a month, and most of them (52 percent) say they allocate an average of 30 minutes for each shopping session, according to a survey by HR platform BestJobs.

There are also employees who take a break from their job roles to shop online more often than once a week (7 percent) or even daily (almost 2 percent), and in some cases the time spent on product search and finalising shopping is over an hour (2 percent).

According to the BestJobs survey, most employees (54 percent) prefer to shop online during afternoons between 15:00 and 18:00, while 19 percent of respondents find time to shop in the morning between 9:00 and 11: 00. Only 15 percent of respondents say they take a break from the office for shopping around their lunch break.

One in two employees often use their personal phone to shop online during work hours and 32 percent use their work computers or laptops. Other devices used by Romanian employees for online shopping are personal PC/laptops (7 percent), personal tablets (4 percent), work phones (2 percent) or tablets provided by the company (1 percent).

Where Romanians shop and what they buy

Among the most frequently bought products through the Internet by Romanian employees are clothing, footwear and accessories (39.8 percent), electronics and home appliances (33 percent), IT products (28 percent), gifts (24.3 percent), cosmetics (15.5 percent), toys and children’s products (9 percent) and DIY products and interior fittings (9.2 percent).

Online shops with clothing, footwear and accessories are most often accessed by Romanian employees. The ranking continues with marketplaces and online stores with electronics and home appliances, with more than a quarter of employees who most often shop online in such stores.

Nearly 1 in 5 Romanian employees say they go on online store websites even when they have nothing in particular to buy, taking advantage of the possible free moments during the workday to find new products in their favorite online stores.

More than a third of employees prefer to use breaks to read articles online and around 30 percent to browse social network pages.

The survey was conducted by BestJobs in August 2018 on a sample of 1,302 internet users, representative at the urban level.
