Microsoft is working on a cashier-free technology for retail stores to challenge Amazon Go initiative

The automatization of retail stores is on sight, with many companies working oh technologies that will allow stores to power-up free check-out. According, to Reuters, Microsoft is working on a technology like that and it has been talking to Walmart. This will rival Amazons already launched cashier-free initiative, named Go, that is used in Seattle. Shoppers can just take the items they want and the multiple cameras and sensors detect what items you-re taking and charged to your account.

Amazon Go is about to expand to Chicago and San Francisco. Meanwhile, Microsoft is experimenting with attaching cameras to shopping carts in order to track items and it already has retail partners building automated checkouts on top of Microsoft’s cloud services.

The sensors used are likely related to Project Kinect for Azure. The company in Redmond unveiled its fourth generation Kinect sensor at Build last month that is designed for others to use the depth sensor and Azure AI services for spatial human object recognition.

Amazon and Microsoft are fighting over the future of cloud computing, with Microsoft in a close second to Amazon’s Web Services. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made it clear that cloud and AI are essential to the future of the company.
