Women in Romania are paid less than men for similar jobs, World Bank report says

Women in Romania are paid 10 percent less than men while having similar jobs and the same level of training, according to a report by World Bank, quoted by Mediafax.

However, in Romania the situation is better than at the level of the entire region.

On average, a woman earns only 80 cents for each dollar earned by a man at the level of the entire region. In Romania, the ratio is 90 cents per dollar,” according to Carolina Sanchez Paramo, senior economist at World Bank.

In Romania, as in the rest of the region, women are employed mostly in the services sector and they are paid les than men.

“There is a problem as there are women with very high training but figures show they work in fields where education is not sufficiently remunerated,” said the representative of the institution.

On the other hand, even women who are appropriately paid for their level of professional training do not have a strong enough voice in politics and society, said Ana Revenga, director in World Bank.

The report of the World Bank will be published in its entirety in October.
