The Bucharest City Hall has announced a new winning logo for the city after the initial image that was selected by a jury looked quite like the logo of Taiwan’s Taipei.

The designer of the new logo is Alexandru Mihai Nenciu. He said that his work tries to capture the assets of Bucharest from the perspective of history, culture, sports and economy. His logo got the second biggest score in the competition.

“The logo I created aims to tell a story, to reconstruct the stages of the history, through the simplified representation of four symbols of Bucharest: The Arch of Triumph, The CEC Palace, The Romanian Athenaeum and the National Arena. The logo acts as a vector that transmits the collective identity,” said Nenciu.

The City Hall will wait one week before awarding RON 50,000 to Nenciu, the grand prize of the competition. The logo will be published on Facebook and on the website of the City Hall to make sure that there aren’t any kind of issues with the image, such as plagiarism allegations – which was the case with the previous winner.

“Even if its birth is more difficult, the logo of a city is necessary, as an identity element, both for its citizens and for the visitors. We have to join the civilized countries in this field, which doesn’t impact in any way the priorities of the administration, respectively healthcare, education, infrastructure and environment,” said Gabriela Firea, the mayor of Bucharest.

There were 204 logos accepted in the competition that had to fulfill the following criteria: relevancy; attractive design, originality, functionality, adaptability.

If there aren’t any issues with the new winning logo, the municipality will decide on May 12 to turn it into the official image of the Romanian capital. In addition, authorities want to put online the other images that were included in the competition.

The jury that selected the winner comprised Bucharest mayor Gabriela Firea, professor Mircia Dumitrescu, a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy, The Arts, Architecture and Audiovisual Section, Adrian Majuru, the director of the Bucharest Museum, Anca Boeriu, leturer of the Graphics department of UNARTE, Vladimir Nocula, PhD, lecturer at the University of Architecture and Urbanism Ion Mincu, Ioana Ciocan, vice president of the Union of Plastics Arts, Dochita Zenoveiov, brand innovator INOVEO, Bogdan Naumovici, managing partner 23 Communication Ideas, Corina Vintan, managing partner Links Associates, Mirel Palada, sociologist.
