US President Donald Trump has replaced Secretary of State Rex Tillerson with the director of the CIA, Mike Pompeo, according to BBC.
Trump said the new state secretary would do “a fantastic job”, thanking Tillerson for his service on Twitter.
Tillerson, a former chief executive of ExxonMobil, was appointed on the position over a year ago.
According to Reuters, Trump publicly undercut Tillerson’s diplomatic initiatives numerous times, including on Monday when the former secretary of state’s comments about Russia were in disagreement with those of the White House. Tillerson also was taken by surprise last week when Trump announced he would meet with North Korea’s leader and become the first sitting U.S. president to do so.
The president also nominated Gina Haspel to become the first woman director of the CIA.
