As polls opened for the European Parliament election and justice referendum on Sunday, tens of thousands of Romanians living or travelling abroad formed long queues in major European cities, many spending up to 10 hours in front of the polling station but not being able to vote due to procedural issues and insufficient resources to process the huge number of voters in reasonable time.
Tensions ran high by the end of the day as Romanian authorities decided they wouldn’t extend voting hours for polling stations abroad. People started chanting against the government and the ruling party (PSD) and posted videos and photos on social media showing the unbelievably long queues in many European cities.
