Today is the start date of the census of the Romanian population and households, the most complex census made after the anti-communist revolution and the first after Romania joined the European Union.
“Developing strategies or budgets cannot be done in the absence of data from a census,” said Francois Farah, charge de security of the United Nations Organisation (UNO) in Romania.
The budget of the census is EUR 45 million for the period between 2011 and 2014, according to Vergil Voineagu, the president of the National Institute of Statistics.
From today, October 21 until October 31, Romanians must be available to answer a number of questions that will lead to a more accurate evidence of Romania’s exact population, the number of Romanians living abroad, the structure of the population according to sex, the number of foreign citizens living in Romania as well as the number of households.
Some of the novelties included in the census refer to the possibility for Romanian citizens to declare if they have double citizenship, whether they belong to a certain ethnic group or religious cult, or if they have disabilities.
The first findings of the census will be made public at the end of January 2012.
