Over 160 companies received funding via Start Up Nation in the first 10 days of the year, Stefan Radu Oprea, the Minister of Business, Commerce and Entrepreneurship said on Monday.

“It is a program that will be the ministry’s star program, which started very well, it is becoming mature, will continue this year too. The 10,000 projects, which were in the governing program, will continue. I believe that the support program, of internationalisation, is a very important one, so that the appetite of the vocation for internationalisation of companies with Romanian capital can be bigger, with the purpose to even the balance , so that export can be at least equal to imports. In the first 10 days of the year, the 160 companies received funding via this program,” Radu Stefan Oprea said.

The Start-Up Nation program started in January 2017 after the government passed an ordinance to stimulate the creation of small and middle sized companies. Via the program, beneficiaries receive up to RON 200,000 grant, representing 100 percent of eligible expenses. The forecasted number of beneficiaries stands at 10,000 SMEs.

The budget for this year was set at RON 1.7 billion, with 1.2 billion coming from the state budget and RON 500 from European Funds.

By 15 December 2017, only 23 beneficiaries had received in their account the RON 200,000, according to ministry sources.
