Employers in Romania are struggling to find university graduates for entry-level positions, according to a new study carried out by Millward Brown, together with the Coalition for Romania’s development and online jobs portal Ejobs.

The study was based on answers from 439 companies and the data was collected between September 2015 and March 2015.

“Seven in 10 employers say it was hard or very hard to find the right employee for an entry-level job that requires university studies. As the size of the company grows the difficulty in finding the right employee reduces. However, even in the case of firms with over 500 employees, half of company representatives say it is hard or very hard to recruit staff with university studies for entry-level positions. The training period for an entry-level employee stands on average at 8 months. Large firms (with over 500 employees) manage to do it in 6 months, probably due to the training systems that are established better,” aid the Coalition in a statement.

Only four in 10 employers said they were satisfied or very satisfied with the quality of the candidates with university studies that were looking for a job.

The Coallition, which comprises the large business associations of the private sector, said that authorities need to tackle the problem of functional illiteracy. Statistics show that 42 percent of children aged 15 are in this category.

The association has also stated that the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) need to be promoted more in the local educational system.
