Royal Family announces Harry and Meghan’s new titles

With every royal wedding, it is customary for the British monarch to offer new royal titles to the bride and groom. Today, Buckingham Palace announced the new titles given to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

‘Prince Harry thus becomes His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex, and Ms. Meghan Markle on marriage will become Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex,’ according to a statement from the Palace.

The Queen has also made her grandson Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel.

The last Duke of Sussex was Prince Augustus Frederick, the ninth child of George III.

Just like Kate Middleton, who became the Duchess of Cambridge when she married Prince William, Markle is taking on her husband’s title and name, according to Elle. This means she will become Her Royal Highness Princess Henry of Wales, alongside the title the Queen has chosen to give her. She will not be Princess Meghan, since only those born into the royal family can use the title Prince or Princess, followed by their first name, like Prince George and Princess Beatrice, for example. As for Markle’s surname, it seems likely that she will take on the last name adopted by the royal family: Mountbatten-Windsor.

If the newlyweds have any children, they will become lords and ladies, rather than princes and princesses – unless the Queen makes an exception.
