The governor of the National Bank of Romania (BNR) Mugur Isarescu said on Wednesday that the Parliament will have the final say on the renewal of his term after it expires in 2019.
The governor said that, as by the time his term expires, he will have turned 70 years old, he should retire. He likened his situation to that of an academic, who cannot teach after turning 70.
“Next fall my mandate will expire. I am turning 70 and, just like with professors, after 70 you can’t do it anymore. The Parliament will choose,” the BNR governor said.
Isarescu has been a governor of the BNR since 1990 and is one of the lingers serving central bank governors in the world.
